Tradition and Transformation: Japanese Art 1860-1940

This woodblock print from 1862, On the North American Continent: The United States, demonstrates the introduction of new subject matter in traditional artistic media during the modernization of Japan.

Immediately following the arrival of Commodore Matthew Perry’s “black ships” in 1853, Japan cast aside its self-imposed isolation from the international community and embarked upon an unprecedented program of modernization. The nation, under the leadership of Emperor Meiji, embraced not only Western social and political institutions but also artistic ones. For some artists however, the pace of change was too sudden and they reasserted the importance of traditional themes and styles. This exhibition in the Japanese Painting Galleries explores the creative tensions that often led to such exciting syntheses of East and West.

Damien Hirst. The Bilotti Paintings: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John

Damien Hirst (British, born 1965): Luke, 2004, from The Bilotti Paintings. Butterflies and household gloss on canvas with mixed media 139 1/2 by 106 3/4 x 4 inches (353.5 by 271 by 10 cm).

Palm Beach resident Carlo Bilotti recently commissioned these monumental canvases from Damien Hirst, the world-renowned British artist. They will be exhibited at the Norton for just seven weeks prior to their permanent installation in Rome. These awesome evocations of the Four Evangelists set the artifacts of writing — pens, phrases, manuscripts — within the cosmic context of infinite space and colorful nebulae. Butterflies symbolize the universal evangelism of those who wrote the Gospels and carried their message to all mankind: "Behold, the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." ...

LEFT: Toward the end of his working life, Degas experimented with intense color and almost expressionistic use of pastel, as in this superb example, Dancers in Rose. Around 1900, Degas was known as one of the great “old masters” of the modern movement; his subjects and style were to inspire a younger generation. RIGHT: Picasso is one of the most significant painter/ printmakers of the Western tradition. His imposing, boldly patterned Woman at the Window (1952) is one of the most expressive of the several hundred inventive etchings that span his long artistic career.

“Degas to Picasso: Modern Masters” is an ambitious, kaleidoscopic survey of European art from 1900 to the 1960s. This unprecedented panorama of modernism from the MFA’s collection occupies the Torf and Trustman Galleries as well as the Museum’s Lower Rotunda, presenting a rare opportunity to see more than 280 works in diverse media, some newly acquired and others rarely on view due to space limitations or sensitivity to light. From the late works of Degas, Gauguin, Munch, and Rodin through the last creative outbursts of Giacometti and Picasso, the exhibition explores major figures in twentieth-century Europe, from late impressionism and symbolism to mid-century modernism. ...
