This exhibition will explore the 50-year career of illustrator and author Maurice Sendak. Best known for children’s classics such as Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen, Sendak is a multi-faceted artist whose work also includes stage sets and costume design for both opera and ballet. Born in Brooklyn in 1928 to Eastern European Jewish immigrants, Sendak grew up in the shadow of the Holocaust, during which many members of his family were lost. Three main themes pervade his oeuvre: the Old World of East European Jewry; Brooklyn/New York and American popular culture; and Germanic culture, embodied by the Grimm Brothers and Mozart, which Sendak eventually embraces in an attempt to work through the trauma of the Holocaust. ...
